Latif Madoi – Style Guru (Uganda)
Come with us now to the Nile basin; to Uganda, East Africa, and meet Latif Madoi, also known as the ‘Afro fashion magician’.
Not because he can pull well-dressed rabbits from a hat, (although that would be quite entertaining). No, the moniker has been earned thanks to Latif Madoi’s impressive ability to create a dress, from conception to completion, in 4 minutes flat.
Hard to believe? Here’s how he does it:
- Conceives the design and measures up – about one minute
- Stretches and cuts the fabric – around sixty seconds
- Sews it all together – another whole minute
- Dresses the model and fine tunes his creation – around one minute
Total time: about 4 minutes. That’s roughly the same amount of time it would take you to boil an egg, provided you like your yolks runny.
There’s no dilly-dallying with complex designs or intricate patterns; it’s pedal-to-the-metal. Stand back and marvel at the fast-track artistry unfolding before your eyes, as Latif goes about his work like a man possessed.
Latif’s self-named ‘express speed design’ began whilst he was performing at a Paris fashion show, where he amazed everybody by constructing a dress in under four minutes. Buoyed by the reaction, he decided to try and set new speed records. And did. Speed became his USP, and was booked to demonstrate his extraordinary abilities at ‘fashion concerts’ – shows that last around 2 hours, during which time Latif would whip up whole collections.
Latif has also started his own fashion academy in Kampala with the aim of nurturing the next generation of young African fashion designers. Naturally, the courses are nano-natured, a three-year course being squeezed into 30 minutes.
